The competition proposal Floor Works reimagines the historic building at Wollzeile 27a as a new center for science communication. Developed from the idea of “working from the ground up,” the project introduces a continuous diagonal floor grid that connects the forecourt, ground floor, and surrounding public spaces into a single, coherent surface. The exposed concrete floor and integrated furniture bring the public realm into the building and make the institution function as part of the urban campus.
Three main halls – the colonnade hall on the ground floor, the first-floor exhibition hall, and the former Jesuit theater – are cleared and form a clear spatial hierarchy. Secondary functions are organized in the side rooms through minimal, reversible interventions that respect the historic fabric. The forecourt is designed as a green “anteroom” with café and outdoor exhibition space, while Ignaz-Seipel-Platz is treated with restrained interventions to preserve the baroque façade of the Jesuit church.
A modular, dark-blue metal exhibition system is anchored in the floor grid and can be used both indoors and outdoors, extending exhibitions into public space and making the building active beyond its opening hours.
